This video shows you how to tell if your rear wheel drive car or truck has a limited slip differential, and also what gears it has. It is quick and all you do is read the tab on the differential pumpkin, or lift the rear and spin the tires... While moving one tire by hand, If the tires move in the same direction (or one doesnt move), it means that it is most likely a limited slip (posi traction) rear end. A limited slip rear uses a special additive to the gear oil when you do a gear-oil change, and it is necessary or damage could occur. An open differential (like the one in the video) does not use the special additive and the tires spin in opposite directions when one tire is spun.

How are the tires spinning in opposite directions?
Would this be the same test for a front diff?
I have two 3 ton jacks. I just lifted the rear wheels both up and it spins in the opposite direction so it's not an LSD like you stated. Thanks!
You also can't tell by spinning the wheels. My mustang has a limited slip and it does the extant same thing. My fusion is AWD and It does the same thing

If you have limited slip then I think both tires spin in the same direction..idk.
Hey Chris, so I also have a RWD Mazda and I was trying to find the fluid that my rear differential takes in the manuel and it says, "Does not require replacement unless submerged in water". Is it wise to go by the manufacturer's word?
I mean, it's common sense to think that a gear oil that is constantly under stress and heat would eventually require replacing.
I just do a burnout and count the marks, 1 or 2 lol
My 83 RamCharger with the toothpick Q-tip 9.25 rear end. When I have it jacked up in 2wd, blocked front wheels. In drive the right rear turns normal while the left wheel sits and chatters.
Something is really wrong to the point I twisted my rear driveshaft till it came apart. New drive shaft installed. left rear chatters right rear turns. 3.26 highway gears.
Any help is or ideas to chase this would be really cool. That goes for anyone reading this. I am an Airplane mechanic, cars are a hobby. I am not good at troubleshooting.

Dear Chris, I did the procedure you mentioned to find out what kind of differential my car has. I would like to mention that the vehicle has Manual transmission with transfer box 4H, 4L. When I did the test 4×4 was off so the vehicle was on 2H. So, both rear wheels were turning in the same direction. So that means the vehicle has LSD. Then, I jacked up one rear wheel and started the engine and I tried to move forward with the first gear. I guess the car was supposed to move forward but it didn't and the lifted wheel kept turning. Is this correct? If yes, what is the purpose of Limited Slip Differential?
My Toyota SAYS AO2C in the door tag which means it has an LSD and the tires spin in opposite direction.
When i do a burn out, i have 2 marks so tires spinning in opposite direction does NOT always mean open diff …
